Our History

The Great Ravine of Delmas in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where Christian Light School was founded in 2000

How It All Began

In the summer of 2000, Sherrie Fausey, a retired school

teacher from Florida, answered the Lord’s call to go to

Port-au-Prince, Haiti, with a vision to establish a tuition-free

Christian school. Through prayer, God led her to a deeply

impoverished area known as The Great Ravine of Delmas.

The families living there resided in makeshift shanty homes built alongside a ravine contaminated with polluted water, sewage, rodents, pigs, and trash. In desperation and lack of alternatives, parents bathed their children and washed clothes and dishes in this unsafe water. Malnutrition, disease, and preventable deaths were widespread, especially among young children.

Recognizing the urgent need for both education and nutrition, particularly for the youngest and most vulnerable, Sherrie opened Christian Light School later that year with 20 students. Her vision extended beyond early childhood—she believed in providing continuous education and spiritual formation through young adulthood.

From its humble one-room beginning, Christian Light School has grown significantly, expanding its programs and reach while remaining rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Today, more than 300 students attend school daily, and approximately 50 babies receive nutritional support through our feeding program.

We believe that Haitian Christians must be equipped to become future leaders in their nation. Education is a powerful pathway out of poverty, and a Christ-centered education is one of the most effective tools we can offer. However, most Haitian families cannot afford school without assistance.

For this reason, Christian Light School provides tuition-free education, along with textbooks, uniforms, school supplies, two nutritious meals per day, and access to medical and dental care—ensuring that each child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive in body, mind, and spirit.

The Future Begins Here

When we look at our students, we see the future of Haiti. At Christian Light School, young minds are eager to learn because they understand that knowledge opens the door to opportunity and hope. Through intentional instruction and mentorship, we lay a strong foundation for future leadership in Haiti.

Leadership is cultivated daily at CLS as students learn, study, and grow—academically, socially, and spiritually. By studying the Word of God alongside academic subjects, we believe we are not only educating minds but shaping hearts. In doing so, we are helping to redirect the future of Haiti by raising a generation grounded in Christian values, integrity, and compassion. These young leaders will ignite positive change in a nation that deeply needs hope and moral guidance.

Each student who graduates from Christian Light School is equipped for success beyond the classroom. Our graduates will speak and understand French, Haitian Creole, Spanish, and English, and will also have knowledge of Sign Language. They will have successfully completed all nationally required examinations in Haiti and will graduate with a diploma that meets Haitian educational standards. Many will also earn certifications aligned with English-language standards, expanding their opportunities for higher education and employment.

It is both our hope and our responsibility to equip Haiti’s emerging generation of leaders—One Meal, One Education, and One Soul at a time.
